Ohno Aniki’s Consultation Guide to Life’s Problems

Q: What should I do in order to balance between my work life and love life?

A: Just go with the flow!!
I wonder… This is kind of tough. Perhaps it’s better to go with the flow? Romance is different from having a hobby, I think one can only play by ear.

Q: How do you achieve a balance between your work and your hobbies?

A: Insert some variety.
I’m basically the type who can’t work well if I don’t get to enjoy my hobbies. I can’t do my best if I don’t see a break up ahead. I’d feel like I’m being squeezed dry if there isn’t variety to my activities. Ideally, hobbies would take up 70% of my time, while work would take up 30%. (laughs)

Q: What kind of fishing would you recommend to a beginner?

A: In any case, just do it!
Regardless of whether it’s river fishing or deep sea fishing, just do it! You won’t know what’s going to happen, and that’s the charm in fishing.

Q: Please tell us about your mentality as a leader!

A: It’s the impression of watching the members from behind them.
Hmmm, there’s [no mentality] in particular. (laughs) Basically, I’m bad at taking charge or putting things in order, so even when I was appointed as Arashi’s leader in the beginning, I didn’t do those things. Rather than taking the initiative to say something, at best, it’s more of watching the members from behind them. In my case, “Leader” is virtually a nickname. (laughs) Besides, if I were to lead lousily the group would be influenced by me [literally: dyed in my colors], so I would like to prevent that from happening. That is why I do nothing [as a leader]. (laughs)

Q: How do you become good at dancing?

A: By enjoying it!
Don’t push yourself into dancing well, but enjoy the process! For example, it’s completely fine even if you mess up on the choreography. The point, in any case, is to just have fun and dance the way you want to.

Q: What’s the way to make the members’ hearts come together as one?

A: The person who is assigned the noblest position has to work the hardest!
To phrase it in an extreme way, if the person who’s placed in the noblest position isn’t working the hardest, no one will follow him. Above all else, I think that is necessary, first and foremost. Other than that, I think it’s necessary to let each member master the field in which he’s good at and to prioritize the work which suits him.

By the way, what happened to the problem which you mentioned?

I can’t tell Matsujun off.
>>Create a person in-charge to tell Matsujun off
Since it would become a serious problem if left unattended, Kitakata Kenzo advised Arashi to appoint a person in-charge (instead of Ohno) to tell Matsujun off. [Shiyagare episode aired on 16.11.2010]

A: It was all an act. (laughs)
The whole thing was virtually an act. (laughs) Right now, it doesn’t bother me at all. If we’re together this much, the actions of the other members virtually don’t bother me at all.

Sakurai Aniki’s Consultation Guide to Life’s Problems

Q: I’m bad at studying. What can I do so that I can come to like it?

A: Schedule your time precisely.
I don’t know what image you have [of me], but I definitely didn’t like to study too. (laughs) I came to be able to balance my work and my studies because the promise that I made to my parents; “if I was retained in school for a year, I would stop working.” I simply fulfilled the responsibility of not letting my grades drop, so that I could continue doing what I wanted. However, I wasn’t able to study at my workplace. So the time spent working was my working time, and studying took place after work ended. That’s how I scheduled my time precisely. When I did that, inevitably my sleeping hours ended up decreasing, so when I had less to sleep, I think it’s important to be able to switch internal modes. As I’ve mentioned previously, although I didn’t like studying, I didn’t hate it, I think. I guess I had a thirst for knowledge. Isn’t it a joy to be able to know more?

Q: Even though when I’m told something I don’t like, I end up laughing it off…

A: It’s an issue which I also had to tackle… In any case, no matter how much time has passed, I’d convey the message.
That was also an issue which I grappled with for the past one year. There was this one thing which I strongly felt like I wanted to stop after I had turned 30. So I really empathize with how you feel. Um hmm, that’s why, I think you should stop laughing it off, that’s one thing. If in the situation where you happened to laugh it off, even after time has passed, I think you should clearly tell the person about how you feel, and say, “That wasn’t really right.”

Q: My future dream is to become a news caster. What should I do now?

A: Find your own voice.
I would say that I didn’t do anything in particular in order to receive this job as a news caster. I read the newspapers before I came to be a caster. Certainly, I think that I read the news in greater detail now that I’ve started news casting. However, rather than resorting to superficial and pretentious measures like taking in large amounts of information, I think there are many more important things. I think it’s important, even when faced with someone younger than I am, to speak to them about a piece of news in their generation’s language, and to convey something with that person’s words. I might be blind to my own shortcomings as to whether I really accomplished this, but I think it’s of utmost importance that you find the words which suit each respective person.

By the way, what happened to the problem which you mentioned?

I toss and turn in my sleep!!
>> Wear a fundoshi. [traditional Japanese male undergarment]
Matsunoya Eitaro recommended Sakurai to wear a fundoshi, so as to return to one’s male roots. This also includes a scene where Sakurai dons a fundoshi. [Shiyagare episode aired on 06.11.2011]

A: I’m not wearing a fundoshi…
I am… not wearing a fundoshi to sleep! (laughs) I’m tossing and turning in my sleep even right now. Sometimes I turn upside down and take off my clothes as well. But I’m not bothered by my sleeping posture. I think the people around me might be bothered by it though. (laughs)
