Kokuritsu Photo Book Crosstalk - 2008, ARASHI AROUND ASIA (1/3)
Here's part 1 of an ambitious attempt to translate the Kokuritsu Photo Book Crosstalk. But honestly, how could I resist? The members take us on a journey through their 6 years in Kokuritsu. Here's how it began.

MC: I’d love for you to freely talk about the scenes and sights of your Kokuritsu concerts which left an indelible mark in your mind. It’s going to be a *long* crosstalk, so I ask for your favor!
Members: Got it. We’ll do our best!
<2008: arashi marks ARASHI AROUND ASIA 2008 / 5 - 6 September>
MC: So in 2008, you had your first Kokuritsu concert.
Nino (hereafter, N): We took a ton of photos during the rehearsals and the location scouting, didn’t we?
Sho (hereafter, S): Yeah!
Aiba (hereafter, A): Yeah, we did.
MC: What happened to those photos?
N: My photos are in my computer.
Jun (hereafter, J): So are mine.
S: Mine too. Speaking of which, didn’t I pass the photos to everyone?
The other 4: Yeah, you did!
MC: So Sakurai-san, you’re Arashi’s cameraman now, right? (laughs)
S: It was really tough, having to burn 4 sets of photos! (laughs)
A: Sho-chan’s camera was huge! (laughs)
S: Hahahaha! I was dead serious about it.
A: Everyone was taking regular photos on their cell phones, but Sho-chan had a humongous, dead serious camera.
Ohno (hereafter, O): My photos were filled with Sho-chan.
S: Oh, Satoshi-kun’s camera?
O: Yeah, my digital camera.
N: Oh~!
O: I have tons of photos of Sho-chan heaving this huuuuuge camera around…
Everyone: [bursts out laughing]
S: I was so happy, I couldn’t help it. (laughs) I thought we would never get a second chance at something like this. I probably felt that it was our first and last Kokuritsu performance.
N: You would think like that, wouldn’t you?
S: I thought it could only happen once.
J: You know, I… I’ve always wanted to do this. To perform there one day.
MC: You did mention that. But you were the only member who said it at that time.
J: That’s right. When we were watching the 2008 documentary just now, Sho-kun said that it was “an unforeseen incident”.
S: Um hmm… That’s what I thought. (wry smile)
N: Um hmm… it wasn’t a goal of ours.
J: We had our own feelings about it, and it was a place where I wanted to perform someday. I was so happy that my dream came true.
S: I was happy too. You know, the moment when we appeared on that stage… I’ll never forget it for the rest of my life. Was it “Love So Sweet”? Hmm? It was “Love So Sweet”, right?
A: Aren’t you forgetting it already?
Everyone: [bursts out laughing]
MC: To think you just said that you’d remember it for the rest of your life…
S: Hahahahaha!
J: You forgot it real fast. (laughs)
S: You see, I was looking at the scenery of the Kokuritsu National Stadium during rehearsals. We saw plenty of the stadium without the audience members. So you know, when we appeared in the middle of the stadium during the 1st song? To see a 360 degree view of our fans covering the Kokuritsu stadium… It was simply overwhelming. As a result, we were able to see that view another 5 or 6 times. But that very first time we saw it… it was kind of amazing. I hadn’t seen anything like that before.
J: It sent shivers down our spines.
N: It was the first time we had seen anything like that.
A: I haven’t been to Kokuritsu much in the first place.
S: Oh, so normally you’d go to the Marine Stadium?
A: That’s right.
J: Yeah, Kokuritsu wasn’t situated in Chiba.
A: That’s right, Kokuritsu wasn’t located in Chiba. (laughs) That’s what made the first Kokuritsu concert all the more moving. And when we released the balloons into the sky… I remember that scene so clearly.
N: The balloons were pretty, weren’t they? And there was, erm… something like a wall.
MC: A wall?
S: Because there were too many people?
N: Yeah. It looked as if it was a wall made of people.
J: In terms of the DVD footage, it’s like… we can clearly see the fans in the first row. During our first concert and such. It’s probably due to the angles and all, there were quite a few cuts which showcased the fans. The first half of the concert took place in daylight, so it really felt as if the audience members were featured clearly.
O: You know, I remember clearly when I first appeared on stage. I got embarrassed when I came out.
S: Embarrassed…?
N: You were embarrassed?
O: Yeah.
The other 4 members: [unanimously] Why, why?
O: Because the audience members were surprisingly close to us. They were much closer than I thought!
The other 4 members: Oooh!
O: They felt really close. I had this image of the audience being further away, since it was a huge arena and all. As I thought, “Ah, they’re this close!” Then I went, “Oh no, this is so embarrassing!”
S: Hahaha! That’s interesting. (laughs) Even though you had been doing this for 9 years, you still felt embarrassed?
Everyone: [bursts out laughing]

Herein lies a special crosstalk which is packed with 6 years’ worth of memories of That Place. We bring to you their natural and real voices, with close to zero editing, as they speak while watching the footage from years past.
