Josei Jishin: Ninomiya Kazunari [2015.03]
I rewrote the blurb 3 times before realizing that I couldn't adequately describe my admiration for a certain Ninomiya Kazunari. He certainly is a talented entertainer, but what really gets me is his commitment and professionalism. Don't let Nino's bratty persona (persona, not personality, mind you) fool you into thinking otherwise.

His message and the things which remain unchanged
During the photo shoot, when the cameraman asked, “Nino, how old are you?” Ninomiya was deep in thought. He shot a glance at the staff, then replied, “Oh right, I’m 31 years old!”

“I’m so uninterested in myself, I could forget my age.”
The studio erupted into laughter, and our interview began.
While being a member of the national idol group, Arashi, Nino has remained unchanged.
“I don’t work for my own sake. Can I exert a positive influence through my participation? Can the quality of the work be better? Can I work harder to make that happen? That’s the first thing that comes to mind. And I’ve always taken that position since our debut.”
I’m not bothered by other people’s critique of my work. But when I’m told things like, “Hey, you appeared in a great show and encountered great people!” It makes me feel truly grateful.”
He gives his all for his current project, so he doesn’t look back on the work he’s done in the past.
Nino games so often that it’s usually the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about Nino. He plays so frequently, he could even keep his fingers going at the game whilst having a conversation and answer questions when asked.
“I’ve been able to hold a conversation whilst moving my hands ever since I was a kid. Don’t you think it’s difficult to ask questions when you’re speaking to someone face-to-face? It might be the first time the person has ever asked such a question, but the other party might have been asked the same question a dozen times. When someone asks me a question like that, I know the answer straightaway, and the conversation doesn’t go beyond that. There’s a silence that occurs after I answer the question. During that silence, I just felt that it would be awkward if I kept looking at the other party. That’s why I keep my eyes on the console screen.”
So we asked Nino, “If someone came to you for advice, would you still be talking to them while gaming?”
“People don’t really come to me for advice. Even when I meet people, they’re mostly my seniors. I’m not intimidated by people who are older than I am.”
Arashi’s new single, Sakura, is the theme song for Ouroboros, a drama starring fellow JE talent Ikuta Toma. It’s the first time the group has provided a theme song to a drama that doesn’t feature any member. Ikuta had joined the agency only a few months before (Nino). And what impression does Nino have of Ikuta? “Toma was already active when I joined the agency. He had great conversation skills and I thought he was amazing even though he’s a kid.”
Nino comes across as someone who doesn’t put on airs; with Nino, what you see is what you get. We wondered what secret lay behind his unchanging nature.
“I don’t try to act like I’m not my age. Humans are meant to age, so why do people feel a need to rebel against it? Everyone has different values, but I don’t think there’s a need to feel young. People don’t have to do such a wasteful thing, do they? That’s what I think.”
I guess Nino will always be Nino.
