The End of an Era: Remembering Himitsu no Arashi-chan



In case you haven't heard, Himitsu no Arashi-chan is ending in March 2013, i.e. it's got around 2 months left! I thought it was time for a tribute post of sorts, so I hope this doubles up as a HnA introduction for the newer fans and a reminiscence for the older more experienced ones.

For the fans who were around since 2008, HnA was actually Arashi's first prime time show; it coincided with Arashi's meteoric rise of fame, even as Japanese audiences were on a Hana Yori Dango* high.

T/N: Both HnA and HYD were TBS programs, this explains the tie-ups between the two shows, such as the "Hana Yori Matsujun" Arashi-chan Special.

HnA began as an investigative "social studies" program, where the members uncovered the secrets (himitsu) of different subjects ranging from Disneyland to Instant Noodles. As the producers seemed to run out of interesting social trivia, they then delved into the infamous Ageha Princesses, a corner which was spearheaded by a rather enthusiastic Aiba.

Since then, HnA has undergone several changes, which included...

Aiba and Ohno hunting for hornets…

Jun and Sho doing extremely ordinary things in a super cool manner…

dumping the guys in ice cold water (a JE first, apparently)…

...before finally arriving at the format which exists today.

although I'm quite new to the fandom, but I enjoy those two sections very much! So much adorableness and random rankings :D

oh and I always wait for the impression of the guest upon Arashi on VIP room :D

so much fun has it gave us.. so sad that it has to end... but I hope it gives the guys more spaces to do more more interesting things!

Haunted House vacation was seriously among the best things they've done in HnA. It tops my list of favorite moments in HnA, followed the childminder and then the Mannequin 5 SP.

I obviously really like it when they go on location shoots lol I prefer the VIP limousine over the Share House.

I honestly hope HnA's ending has nothing to do with the in-fighting within the jimusho though :/

Haunted House is pretty funny! I had a guilty pleasure watching Jun do it for the Shiyagare New Year SP.

I don't think HnA is ending because of the infighting. The show's ratings have been going down and you can see that Arashi's filming the show at odd times (like after 10pm) due to conflicting schedules.

I knew that HnA will end since it was announced but looking back like this is quite sad, though HnA brought me a lot of joy :') But I think this is a brilliant idea, just that when I first saw what the post is about, I wanna cry!

At first I wasn't too sad when I heard HnA would be ended (kinda expected that to happen) but not that it's drawing closer... *sob*

My moments are:

My favourite HnA moment is in first childminder episode, when Sho had to crouch down because Koharu-chan didn't want to let go of his comfortable sloping shoulders. It's so sweet and so hilarious at the same time.

And I didn't enjoy Hana Yori MatsuJun date at first because of sheer jealousy (I didn't know they all were celebrities) but it is one of my favourite HnA episodes now because of Ooshima-san's awesomeness ♥.

I think there's too many episode that very interesting. It's quite sad when I heard that HNA will be ended soon. It's so fun watching them in HNA. When they are a childminder. Their interaction with the kids is so sweet.

When they make Hana Yori Dango with one of the comedian script, it is really so funny. I hope there will be some communitied that repost it because I watched it streaming and not download it. I really want to watch it again.

VIP room is amusing too. I think most episode of HNA is amusing and entertaining. It is so fun watching HNA.

hahaha! i've not watched all the HnA episodes... have not been a fan for that long... but i did went back to watch from the start... till... somewhere... before i got bored and stopped... (watching HnA all day long takes it toll, as much as u like the show/group)

I'm glad/proud to say that i've actually watched all the episodes that got screencapped! Well ok the dunking ice thing i only watched a few episodes but...

I really liked the program at the start, the digging up of stuff about jobs... was really educational. Arashi taking care of the kids was very interesting too. Cute arashi + cute kids, who can resist? ;) The agepoyo princess thing got just a bit too much after a while... then there was a stretch where there was new halves on the show every episode/every other episode? It was around then that i stopped i think? Have nothing against new halves but its just too much of one thing...

VIP room i have not watched all, but that was ok... really depends on the guest and what they did... as with limo... mannequin 5... i don't like it THAT much. i find it boring for the most part... mannequin 5 SP is a totally different thing. I'm soooo going to miss that! I hope they do one last mannequin SP before the show ends... or that it continues after HnA ends. Share house is epic fun too, going to miss that loads as well!

On the whole though, I'm not surprised that the show is coming to an end - i was actually wondering if they should end it already/if it was going to end soon... there was a time when they kept trying out new corners right? Like the myth buster thing that happened like 2 or 3 times... and restuarant thing which lasted a wee bit longer. It was clear to me that they were running out of ideas/stuff to do... like come on... the show was deviated so far off from its original purpose already, i bet you'd never have guess how the show used to be like!

But yes, i'll miss HnA for sure! off topic: I wonder what's the new program that SHo will be hosting about... hmm... XD

I get what you mean when you lost interest during the New Half "era", so to speak. My gripe was about the excessive use of VTRs, I wanted to watch Arashi do stuff, not Arashi watching VTRs.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on the point of the show running out of ideas. The mythbuster and Ristorante Botsu corner never really did catch my interest.

omg I laughed so hard at your fav moment, I have never watched that ep. I'm exactly like leader but as I grow up, I feel embarrassed to sit like that during lectures. At school, yes I can, but no more during university huhu

I don't remember much from HnA though, but I got to say I love the un-aired episode where Sho talked and imitated how Aiba fell during one of the concert. The way Sho imitated is cute and the story itself was hilarious ;)

And also, the first of Mannequin Special I think, the part where Jun and Aiba met each other, and Aiba wondered if they were probably have the same idea and turned out they both really had the same idea. It was really like an anime LOL The way they had (...) for a moment after they realized they had the same style xDD

Oh yeah, just remember. Doubt Action is the segment that I love the most. Too bad it was only for awhile. Maybe not so popular to the others..?
And also an episode of Prank on Ohno and Nino-the ghost thingy one. Although I felt poor for them but at the same time, it was funny. Maybe Nino's one is quite too much but Ohno's one is really best. I think that one is kinda okay because it was plotting by the members ;p But Ohno really looked like he was going to cry lol poor him.

for me, I really loved VIP Room segment, and kind of dissapointed when they change it to VIP Limousine. Love their atmosphere around each other that's why I kind of dissapointed because in Limousine there just 2 of them.

I love their very first segment too, in which they search and explain social studies here, although some of them is boring *sorry, but it's true XD*

Which I don't like *not asked but I want to write it* is Ageha corner, hmm, I'm bored watching it. I think it's good enough for one episode but not too many...

So sad the program must end TTT__TTT when I started to <3 the new format of the show...share house format...seems 嵐 also <3 the new format...laid back feeling which is so nice...
If u ask what moments I like the most...it will be so hard coz there was so many moments...<3 the haunted house SP...so damn funny...Hana Yori Matsujun...epic moments in ViP room...and I have to say Mannequin 5...
Gonna miss the show like I missed ANS...hopefully they will get new show with 5 of them...

I suspect that Arashi chickened out on the Mote Dame segment because the producers couldn't get the boys to write down any more of their "real thoughts". They were too afraid of getting dunked. Not to mention that it felt scripted after a while. Aiba would have gotten dunked every episode otherwise.

It's actually the longest running Arashi show, eclipsing VS Arashi by 2 days, and if you discount the fact that C D G no Arashi were effectively one big series.

Seeing this post really brings back memories~~ ^^ I was happy when they change the format of ageha series into VIP room.. but then they changed it into VIP limousine and Share House where only a pair of the member showed up.. >__<

My favorite Segment:
1. Ranking Derby (Cuz I can see them in horse costume ^^)
2. Ohno fishing Club (kkk, I really love it when he shows his hobby in their variety shows)
3. Aiba-Sho one day date in Chiba (Totally love this episode!!!)
4. Mannequin Five Special (Cuz I can see Jun lost in most of the SPs, Sho's calculated movement in choosing his clothes, Nino's cheeky way to win, Ohno's free way in choosing his clothes n his weird reasoning in price, and Aiba showy fashion)
5. Share House (I love this better than VIP limousine~~ but it means bye2 to Ohno fishing club)
6. Haunted House SP (Cuz I can see Ohno's expressionless, Sho n Aiba screaming all the way~~~ XD)

Seeing this post and comments, makes me want to re-watch all HnA episodes~~~

The summer vacation trip (and calling Sho in Beijing). Nino fanboying the gamer guy in the specialist episode (way waaaaay early). Childminder. The Super Mario tournament (and Jun proving that he was the biggest nerd of 'em all...). Ohne being forced to wear a gazillion T-Shirts to break some record. Nino (and Gyaru!Aiba) dressing up to get their fortunes told. Arashi plus Daigo picking out cosmetic surgeries on New Halves. The Ageha craze (lasting soooo many episodes). The bakakkoi challenges (part one and two). THE HUMAN BEATBOX THING <3 The "first impression of Arashi" before the VIP room segment. ... Childminder (Sho and Nino being awesome in it, while a Jun-Ohno-Aiba combination might end badly for the children. Far too few episodes, btw. Dunno why they cut it so short...?). Mannequin five!!

Will be missing HnA. Even the Arashi sits around and watches YouTube videos format it had for a while. Mixed feelings here, btw. While I want them to have more time I will be incredibly sad to see the show gone. Same happened with Shukudai, but that one was replaced by Shiyagare, so it was less definite. *off to re-watch old episodes now*

The Bakakkoi challenges were ludicrous, which made for excellent TV. I'd love to see my local TV station adapt it. I suspect that Childminder was cut short because no more celebrities were willing to volunteer their toddlers to be taken of by Arashi.

aaa..I'm so gonna be missing himitsu so much!When I started to follow Arashi, some 3 years ago, himitsu is the one show that I always watched. I remember searching the net for old episodes of himitsu just so I can have the complete episodes..lol. My favourite, the haunted house episode (so much LOL moments), childminder (I can watch them playing with children all day long), the VIP rooms of course! And not forgetting Mannequin 5! Gosh, epic fashion moments were born from that segment.
You should do this more often..Haha. It gives us the reason to spazz and fangirl and look back on their awesomeness. So sad that this fixed features in my life is gonna end soon..

Himitsu no Arashi-chan is my all time favorite tv show, nothing can top it. My favorite segment is VIP room and Mannequin Five with all of them together. Their early shows were good too, I have watched almost all HnA episodes except for the new ones. Was really depressed when heard that HnA is ending, I miss Arashi with Othello :/

Hmmm, it is really pity, that the show is coming to its end. Though I don´t like its present format so much, especially some of the older episodes were soooo gooood!
Definitely those, which mentioned above or now I´m thinking about the one, where Aiba went on "date" with Sho, or the (K)araoke house episode, or some epic bits from VIP room like Aiba´s Rambo with Nakayama Shouko, Tabe-chan´s Camera Man, modelling strategies and so so on...
It was really so fun to watch this show...
