Shinigami-kun was a fun watch! Do catch it when the subs are released~

Interviewer Hashimoto Tatsunori sits with Ohno as he reveals his thoughts on singing, dancing, acting, hobbies and family.

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

ohno05

Ohno Satoshi is taciturn by nature. Or rather, he doesn’t speak unnecessarily. Of course, as a guy he’d joke and say stupid things, but there are times when he wants to put himself on display. I think you’ll get it when you see his solos in concert. He merely dances, and the staging indicates the training that he has had behind the scenes. He’s the same way even in interviews like this. A gruffness that stems from the shyness that is unique to a guy. But look beyond the surface, and you see a gentleness. If I were to borrow the words of Sakurai Sho in “Atarashi Arashi”, which aired recently, Ohno is someone who leads by example. In a sense, he’s like a man from the Showa era with an artisan’s temperament. We close in on Ohno Satoshi, the man who is himself.

Speaking of cycles, when I met you for our TV Guide columns, I was the same age as you are right now.

“Seriously!? We often used to go for meals after our interviews back then. Times flies, huh? Has it been 12 years already?”

That’s right. (laughs) We used to take the same train line, so we had plenty of chances to talk. Now that I think back to those times, during our conversations I could see that you’re a hard worker.

“Nah, I only worked at the things I liked. (laughs) I just happened to like singing and dancing. The lucky thing is, I was able to make that my job. Well, it also explains why I was able to do it.”

You’ve done more dramas in the past few years. What is acting to you?

“Erm… When I first heard about doing a drama, I thought, ‘Oh dear, I have to act in front of others.’ (laughs) Kyoto was fine, you know? The stage play had singing and dancing. But I was like, ‘A drama…?’”

In what way were you bothered?

“I think the other members will understand, it’s just not in my nature. Firstly, I find it embarrassing, you see. (laughs) I’ve gotten pretty used to being on set. I’ve come to do my thing in its own way. I do feel like I enjoy acting.”

You made your first drama appearance in the 2001 drama, “SPEED STAR”.

“That’s right. Tackey was the lead actor. It also featured Kishitani Goro and Shibata Kouhei, et cetera. Come to think of it, the drama had lots of amazing actors. I play a young car thief who got sucked into trouble and died. I don’t remember the details though… (laughs) If memory serves me right, in my dying moments, I was doing this. [Makes a gesture where he’s grasping at the air. And I was stuffed in a trunk… I was nervous when I interacted with Shibata-san, so it felt like my drama appearance was over while I was so preoccupied.”

Like in the drama, “Kyo no Hi wa Sayonara”, Naruse Ryo from “Maou”, Riff from “West Side Story”, Fusuke from Sengokupu… you’ve played a lot of ephemeral characters.

“Now that you mention it… it’s true. I wonder why…”

You starred with Ikuta Toma in your first leading role in a drama. What was it like when you first heard the news?

“I thought, ‘This tough assignment came out of the blue!’ (laughs) What’s more, in the beginning, when we spent a whole day filming the scene in the red room, I thought, ‘What’s going to happen after this?’ And I became even more anxious. I’m so relieved to have filmed it with Toma. Although we didn’t speak much because our characters were hostile towards each other, we unconsciously shook hands after we finished filming the last scene.”

The surprise ending left a deep impression.

“The filming ended with that last scene between Naruse and Serizawa. Toma mentioned this too, the both of us had been so tense throughout the past 4 months; so the moment the director yelled “Cut!” it was as if something gushed out of our bodies… That was the first and last time I had ever experience such a sensation, I think.”

I feel that you’ve often been cast in roles like Kaibutsu-kun because there’s an evanescence in Ohno Satoshi, and which comes and goes.

“I wonder… I don’t know if it’s evanescence though. It’s just that I’ve carried out each job and lived each day like I have in the past. To put it extremely, I might disappear tomorrow. So I want to live with no regrets.”

These answers and the insights of someone whose known him in the entertainment industry really has given some new perspective oh who he has become today. Ah, he has matured a lot from that boy I started watching a couple of years back.

Just curious. In your translation you use the term ephemeral character. What does that term actually means?
