Has anyone here caught Aiba's Tokyo Live 24 Hour? It's a lovely show if you're able to understand the dialogue.

I've translated a snippet from the show in which Aiba offers advice to a girl who was dumped by someone she liked.

aiba05
THIS letter comes from Sumisho-san, aged 23.

I’m fat and weigh close to 100kg. I thought it would be impossible for me to have a relationship with my current body weight. However, recently I’ve found someone whom I like. He doesn’t mention my weight, and kindly says to me, “You sure can eat!”

aiba08
For his sake, I frantically underwent a diet for a year and my weight decreased to 45kg. And I took the plunge and confessed my feelings for him. He then said, “I don’t really like fat people…”

aiba06
So I guess men are bothered by a girl’s past after all, aren’t they? I’d love to hear everyone’s opinions.

aiba07
Isn’t this man terrible for saying that!?
He sure is.
Let’s give her a call, shall we?

aiba09
[Aiba dials frantically.]

I mean, she’s now 45kg, right? She lost more than half her weight!

That’s right!

[Sumisho picks up the phone.]

Hello!

Hello! This is Arashi’s Aiba Masaki. Good evening, I’m calling from Tokyo Live 24ji! Sumisho-san, are you tuning in?

Yes, I am!

Isn’t it amazing? Your weight dropped from 100kg to 45kg, right?

That’s right.

Wow! This bothered me a little, when you confessed to him, he said, “I don’t really like fat people…” Is that right?

Yup.

That’s terrible!

He was.

Yeah! That’s a terrible way to put it!

I was really hurt.

After he said that to you, what happened? Did you get upset, or did your weight rebound or something?

I put on around 3kg.

So you’re 48kg now?

Yeah.

That’s amazing! Do you have any options in mind? [Aiba asks that because after presenting the options, the viewers will get to take a vote using the LINE application.]

The first option would be not hide the fact that I used to weigh 100kg from any person I come to like in the future. The second option would be to take the plunge and tell them upfront.

May I tell you my personal opinion?

Okay.

I think people who can successfully diet and exhibit self-control are truly amazing. I kinda respect them. And I’ve been to elementary, middle and high school; there isn’t a single bad person amongst my friends who were chubby. They were able to show kindness to others. For people who harbored some sort of complex, they knew how to be kind. So Sumisho-san, you have that quality, and you’re now slender as well. That makes you invincible!

aiba11
Seriously! That’s how I feel.

[hesitant tone] …really?

Yeah. You can show kindness to others, and you have a slender figure. I think that’s incredible. Nanana-chan, what do you think?

Honestly, Aiba-kun said some wonderful things. Were you by any chance reading off some cue cards? I thought you were speaking differently.

aiba12
I WAS NOT!

You had such wonderful words! I thought they came from a cue card.

I've always thought Aiba had the most gentle heart. And being fat in Japan is definitely something that will be remarked upon. While I was teaching there, it was very common for my students and my Japanese coworkers to say something about. In particular, my students thought it was okay to make fun of me for being overweight. I weigh just as much as sumishiro-san did prior to her weight loss so I know her struggle. One of those students even told me that I'd never be married because I was too fat. Some Japanese, particularly men, can be really insensitive to larger women, even those who are maybe three or four kgs overweight.

It makes me feel.... I don't know. Wonderful, I guess, that my favorite person in the entertainment world is so accepting of all types of people. I knew I picked him for some reason, but the fact that these words came out of his mouth without any type of preplanning or prompting from the cue cards. Ah, Aiba. I love him more and more every day.

It's moments like these that make me love Aiba :) He's usually so silly and willing to be made fun of by other people in the industry that it's easy to think of him as being simple-minded and innocent. But every now and then, he will say things that are seriously DEEP, and make you realize that behind that baka face he puts on for the entertainment is a mind that is remarkably thoughtful, reflective, and kind.

And I agree that night 2>> night 1, even though both nights were entertaining :) How I wish I was in Japan so I could submit my own question! Thanks for the translation. I enjoyed reliving these tender Aiba moments with you ❤

that's so sweet! this isn't a regular segment of Aiba's, is it?

at first I was a bit disappointed that he didn't say her weight wasn't a factor in her worth, I think she also needed someone to validate the effort she put in to lose the weight...

Aiba totally won my heart over!! ♥

Wow! That's so mean of that guy. It passed a year and still can enjoy the present her? Sometimes when people putting off another people, I really want to see that person myself and hope that person in actuality is just a "meh!"

awwww.... Aiba Masaki... *melting into a puddle of goo*

I always knew he was kind, and nice, and though he's always said that no one ever comes to him for advice (I think he said this too during the promo for this Tokyo Live program), he's shown that he's a really good listener and so very encouraging and empathetic in just this small excerpt.

Thank you for translating this nugget. So precious. <333

although I am a bit worried for this girl loosing THAT amount of weight in such a relatively short time & am not happy about the "you need to be slender to be invincible"-thing

I am happy Aiba was able to make a strong point about her personality instead of her weight (although it's a cliché to call somebody kind just because she/he has a complex... it's true sometimes but can also be completely wrong -.-)

but he's handsome while doing so... XD

Thank you for translating!

Both Sho AND Nino, jesus.

It's really disappointing, that view. And while I thought for the most part that they weren't malicious about it, that it was just a trait that was to be commented on, such as "Hisashiburu, yoku futotta ne~?" mitai na komento. But more and more I'm being proven wrong. That a lot of men do in fact think it's horrible and gross and etc.

One of the things I majorly hate about Japan. /rant
