Thanks for pointing out my mistake. Actually "gray zone" in this context simply meant that Arashi was doing stuff that wouldn't be considered an idol-like activity or a non-idol type activity.
I simply copied that portion which I translated from 5 years ago, so thanks for proofreading. :)
