Watch out for the incoming Freestyle Fiesta!

Here's a snippet from Sports Hochi, which gave a glimpse into the dialogue between Arashi's Sakurai Sho, Ohno Satoshi and NEWS' Kato Shigeaki that will take place on 31 July.

idol plus alpha

The dialogue between the three idols were held in a spin-off program of News Zero, which was hosted by the same TV network where Sakurai worked as a news caster. “I’ve heard many things for the first time, from Kato of course, and from Ohno, who’s a fellow Arashi member as well.” Said Sakurai.

Ohno is slated to hold his second art exhibition in Tokyo on the 24th, since his first one 7 years ago. The impetus for Ohno’s dive into creative work was, surprisingly, his idol profession.

Stress Relief

“If I was only working, I wouldn’t have been able to find balance in my life. I started relieving stress by creating art, and my heart felt lighter.”

Although he found satisfaction in simply drawing, at the same time, he had hit the wall when it came to creating art.

“I was concerned about how people assessed my work, so there was a period when I couldn’t draw. At that time, (renowned artist) Nara Yoshitomo-san said to me, “Even so, you just have to keep on drawing.”

It felt as if everything was packed within that simple answer. The weight was just taken off his shoulders.
Inspired by Ohno, Kato resolved to become an author.

The inspiration from Ohno

Kato: There was a period when I wondered if there was any meaning to being within a group. (NEWS) had 10 members, and I thought that if there were too many people, I could just leave. However, when I saw Ohno holding his own art exhibition, I felt that he raised the profile of Arashi.

Ohno: When we went fishing, he bombarded me with questions for 5 hours! I gave him a push and said, “Go for it!” Which is why I was happy when he published his book. It was as if he emerged from his tunnel.

Kato: Now that NEWS is down to 4 members, we’ll be idols through and through.

After starting in News ZERO in 2006, Sakurai is into his 10th year. Sakurai aspired to be a caster when he was 20, as he checked into a hospital for treatment for his wisdom teeth.*
T/N: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] eien_rhapsody who pointed out my mistranslation of wisdom teeth!

Sho: When I watched the interviews on TV, I thought, “I wanted to try that sort of work.” There was a risk associated with being an idol, so it was a challenge.

From interviewee to interviewer. He was caught in an inner conflict daily.

It was worth doing this.

Sho: When I interviewed athletes who’d lost, it was like rubbing salt into their wounds. But if I didn’t interview them, I wouldn’t have any material to broadcast. Although it can be tough sometimes, there are also other times when it was worth doing.

Ohno: From now on, I’ll pay more attention to Sakurai caster when I’m watching News ZERO.

The three men who paved their way in their respective fields whilst carrying out their work as idols. It was a session where they reaffirmed the feelings that only pioneers would understand.
