The people at WITH sat down with Arashi and compiled the Arashi Dictionary! Ohno acted as Chief Editor. We'll start with the letter A and see where this leads us.

Are You Happy?

Jun: Compared to albums from the past 2 years, the (current album) has a broader theme and variety of music styles. Everyone did what they wanted, so not having a concept kind of became the overall concept. With respect to the concert, it had various interesting components, which, in itself, had its difficulties. That being said, it would have been boring to try and consolidate everything together (laughs). Although it became more spontaneous, I think it turned out well. I personally feel that (the concert) has turned out to be something different from what we’ve had the past 2 years.

Backstage

Nino: It’s where the 5 of us do what we want. We don’t really talk excitedly together, and we’re preparing for the concert in our own ways. In the past, we even had 2 people taking a shower together, but we don’t do that anymore. The other 4 members have a fixed routine before the concert, so they’re busy. I’m the only one who doesn’t have anything to do (laughs), so I’ve come to use the common area without intruding on their personal space!

Costume

Aiba: Speaking of Arashi’s costumes, it would have to be the see-through costumes we wore for our debut song, A.RA.SHI, right? Since we wore those at the very beginning, you could say that we were fine with all the other costumes thrown at us (laughs).

Sho: That’s because we started off with see-through costumes, you see. In that sense, it turned out to be a good thing!

Aiba: We developed an immunity since then (laughs). And there were the incidents during the concert’s super-fast costume changes. Don’t you guys get tangled up in the costumes?

Everyone: …no.

Jun: Oh, but during the arena tour, it happened to Leader once, during Kokoro no Sora.

Ohno: Oh yeah, it happened!

Nino: Oh yeah, it happened to me too.

Ohno: Because we were changing costumes when the light went dark, I got confused.

Nino: It’s difficult to change costumes in the dark.

Aiba: That’s true. I’ve also had times when I got so excited and forgot to take off my costume when I was supposed to.

Jun: Oh, so that’s the result of you getting too excited (laughs).

Aiba: When I was communicating with the audience, I accidentally (forgot to change my costume)…

Jun: You were communicating way too much (laughs)!

Aiba: That’s right. Recently, when I received this instruction through my in-ear monitor, “Aiba-san, Sakurai-san, please take off your costumes,” I thought, “Oh crap!” (laughs)

Sho: We were too focused!

Ohno: Because the 2 of them didn’t notice, I thought I would make this gesture [Ohno does the motion of taking off his clothes] when we made eye contact, but the 2 of them didn’t look my way at all! That’s when I gave up (laughs).

Sho: Hahaha! You just left us alone? Even though Ohno-san didn’t make a mistake, it seemed like he was in the wrong.

Jun: Because you guys were in the same float, and Ohno-san was the only one who took off his costume.

Sho: Recently, I was so frantic when changing costumes that I donned a headset when we were supposed to sing with hand microphones. I was the only one with 2 microphones (laughs).

Nino: But you somehow know when you’ve messed up by looking around, right?

Aiba: Getting help from the person nearest to you then is one of those things that happens during a concert, right? However… there are times when we were too caught up in the mistake (laughs).

Nino: That’s where the feelings come in (laughs).

Aiba: That’s right, I understand the feeling!

Dance

Aiba: The dance which left an impression on me was Funky, which we danced together with everyone. It was magnificent to see everyone who had watched the choreography video, memorized the dance, from the stage. Personally, I’d forget the choreography if I get too excited during the concert, so I focus when dancing. And I think I have to remember the Truth choreography from scratch every time we perform it. The other 4 members can probably recall the steps, but I have to relearn everything, so it’s tough. (laughs)

Emotional

Jun: Concerts are an enjoyable part of Arashi’s activities, after all. In particular, this concert wasn’t planned precisely. Rather, it was important that we went with the flow for (Are You Happy), so I think this show felt more live than all our other concerts? It’s interesting how the impression differs each time, depending on the venue. To have established that sort of looseness, it’s something which is possible now, and we’ve had lots of fun doing it!

Furitsuke (choreography)

Ohno: For my solo, Bad Boy, it felt like I was drawing out the parts where I just kept moving. For the group numbers, I basically choreographed it while bearing in mind the following: It should be easy to synchronize, easy to remember and impactful. For TWO TO TANGO, I created it to showcase the 5 members in a sleek way.

Group

Sho: Ease – that was the word which someone said to me recently that made me happy. When I was watching an Arashi show with acquaintances, someone said, “Why is Arashi cool…? I get it, it’s the ease that comes with being an adult!” Come to think of it, of course we’d get nervous during music programs and all, but we’d also go, “Oh no!” while smiling at each other. I think it’s something similar to effortlessness? I’ve never thought that the strength of our group could be described as “effortless”. On the contrary, I thought if we were conscious of it, we would look uncool. It’s nice to be seen that way by others.

Hotel

Sho: We have to watch that soon!

Ohno: That overseas drama that’s popular right now.

Sho: Nino and Aiba were talking about it, you see!

Ohno: Sho-chan and I were the only ones who have yet to watch it.

Sho: We have nothing to do when we get back to our hotel, so we said, “Shall we watch it together!?”

Ohno: We want to be fashionable! (laughs)

Sho: It doesn’t happen every time, but if we do gather during a tour, it’s usually in Ohno-san’s room.

Ohno: It has always been like that. Oh, but it’s not because my room is the biggest, as Arashi’s Leader (laughs). Everyone’s room is the same size!

Sho: I think everyone just didn’t want their rooms to get messy. So we went ahead and imposed on Leader.

Ohno: It doesn’t really bother me!

Sho: You being the person you are, makes it easy to gather in your room! (laughs)
