How's everyone doing? Seeing that Arashi released their newest album, Untitled, today, I thought I'd bring you their Unit Number Talk where they discuss the unit songs in this album. Read on to find out which unit went for the sexy adult vibe and which one wants to take down Ohmiya SK!

arashi untitled

Ohno: Since we’ve been performing solos all this while, we’re getting a fresh start by taking on unit songs in this album! We thought it’d be good if we could split into units of 2 to 3 persons. We’d like to talk about the unit songs in today’s round table discussion!
Everyone: Okay~!

Jun: How was it like attempting the unit songs?
Aiba: Attempting…
Jun: Although all of us discussed what type of songs we wanted to perform, the staff decided on the groupings for us. From that point onwards, we just discussed what to do, right?
Nino: For us (Aiba-Nino unit, “UB”), it was proposed during the Tokyo Waku Waku Gakkou, right?
Aiba: That’s right!
Sho: The two of you kept talking about it, right?
Aiba: We decided what we’d do the day we received (the assignment).
Sho: I was sleeping at the side, but I thought you guys kept talking about it.
Jun: What sort of song was it supposed to be?
Aiba: We originally wanted to do a folksy song together.
Jun: Ah!! You did say that! Something about you two practising guitar together.
Sho: That being said, when I woke up it became a totally different song.
Aiba: It did turn out different, yes? There were various complications.
Nino: We talked about it frankly, didn’t we? Seriously. (laughs)
Aiba: (We wanted to do) something that the five of us couldn’t do.
Nino: Yeah.
Jun: Why did it go from a folk song to this?
Nino: How did it happen, I wonder? An encounter. We had an encounter.
Jun: You watched something in between the breaks for Waku Waku Gakkou, right?
Aiba: That’s right, we watched various footage for research.
Jun: You did that relatively early on!
Aiba: Our unit song took shape pretty quickly.
Nino: We recorded that song first, didn’t we?
Jun: You finished it rather early.
Nino: We decided on our number immediately.
Jun: The title “UB”… It’s as if the two of you built the world described in the lyrics.
Aiba: The theme, yes?
Jun: May we ask about the theme?
Aiba: We can’t tell you about the theme.
Nino: That’s right. (laughs)
Jun: You’d have to feel it. (laughs)
Aiba & Nino: Just feel it.

Jun: How about “Bazuri NIGHT”?
Aiba: “Bazuri NIGHT” was quick, right?
Sho: It was! Initially, we thought of a vibe that channelled three handsome older brothers… A sexy adult feel…
Nino: Did you not go with that in the end? The sexy adult vibe.
Sho: Um hmm. Once we surveyed each face, we ended up not going with it.
Nino: You could tell just by surveying the face.
Jun: You weren’t feeling it?
Nino: That this wasn’t it.
Jun: That it wasn’t the sexy adult vibe.
Aiba: We didn’t have the confidence, you see. To pull off the sexy adult vibe.
Sho: Then we spotted an empty slot among the other unit songs that had turned up. We decided to go for that seat.
Nino: You thought you could occupy that seat, yes? (laughs)
Sho: When I listened to it asI was driving recently, it was shining!
Aiba: Surprisingly?
Sho: It felt as if I had hung something fragrant on the front mirror, and wanted to turn on the black light.
Aiba: I wanted to make it smell of coconuts.
Nino: That would be a buzz!
Ohno: The recording went so quickly, it felt the fastest by far.
Aiba: We created a new record!
Jun: Amazing! (laughs) Do you keep singing in unison?
Sho: That’s right.
Jun: Are you thinking about the live performance?
Aiba: We thought about it after recording the song, it would be nice if it we could try something a little fun.
Jun: Something fun. I’m looking forward to this as well.

Jun: Moving on, we have “Yoru no Kage” (Matsumoto & Ninomiya & Ohno). This is the sexy adult vibe, yes?
Nino: Because the sexy adult slot was available, you see. (laughs)
Jun: We just slipped into it.
Sho: What was it originally meant to be?
Jun: In the beginning, it was rather like a Shonentai song. A pop dance tune.
Sho: Well, a dance is a dance.
Nino: We were told, “We hope you guys dance!” So we decided that it would be a song we’d dance to. We kept pondering about it.
Jun: Then as the conversation veered towards having Leader choreograph the song for us, we concluded that we wanted a slow dance. So we slipped into the available “sexy adult” slot. Do you have an image of the choreography?
Ohno: Not yet… Is it the first time we have 3 members performing?
Jun: I think it’s the first time? I don’t remember having 3 members dancing before.
Ohno: We haven’t done this before, huh. I wonder… it feels trendy, somehow.
Nino: The song sounds trendy, you see.
Jun: When we first decided on the song’s direction, I remember talking about wanting something that’s a little gentle and slow tempo. Ohno-san, you’ll choreograph the live performance for us, right?
Ohno: Um hmm. I’ll do my best… I’ll finally start working on it the day after tomorrow. (laughs)

Jun: Lastly, we have “Come Back” (Matsumoto & Sakurai), I guess.
Sho: What was it like originally? I can’t remember.
Jun: Among the unit songs that came up, it was initially suggested that we perform a duet. The one we did before… How many years ago was it, I wonder? 16 years ago? I have an impression of that performance.
T/N: Jun was referring to the song, “Get Yourself Arrested”, which was performed during the ARASHI All Arena Tour Join the STORM in 2001 – 2002.
Sho: That’s right. It’s (so obscure) that even the current staff don’t know about it.
Jun: It was something along the lines of, “Please do a rap”?
Sho: I can’t remember at all. (laughs) In any case, there were pairs who had done unit songs in the past, we mixed and matched different units in 2001 or so, but they were all eliminated except for Ohmiya.
Ohno & Nino: Ufufufufu.
T/N: I take it that Ohmiya was cackling delightedly.
Sho: Among the souls who had perished, was the performance with Matsujun and I, but there were many people who didn’t know that we had performed that song. It left me frustrated, so we attempted a continuation of the song from back then. We’re going to take down Ohmiya SK! (laughs)
Jun: This time, there were no requests for Ohmiya SK.
Nino: There weren’t any, yes?
Sho: Because you had the most appearances. (laughs)
Jun: Any offers…?
Nino: Nah…
Ohno: There weren’t any…
Aiba: Even though you performed the most frequently.
Jun: Certainly. You guys come to mind the moment we talk about units.
Sho: How about just making a sudden appearance during the concert? (laughs)
Everyone: Fuhahahaha!
Nino: Shall we hold a protest? With the two of us.
Ohno: With the two of us… (chuckles)
