In this interview taken from the Kagi no Kakatta Heya website, Ohno discusses the trick to memorizing his difficult lines, working with locks on set and his character, Enomoto Kei.

Enomoto Kei, whom you portray, is a so-called “Security Otaku” who is an expert in breaking in locked rooms and unlocking things. What impressions do you have of Enomoto Kei?

Enomoto seems to have been a latchkey kid who did not interact much with people since he was a child. As a result, when he was playing with a lock and opened it, he could not take his mind off locks. And because there’s this part of me which fixates on something, I thought we were similar in that aspect. However, when I saw the script, he spouts technical babble which I have never seen in my life; I thought, “Okay, he’s different from me!” (laughs) On the contrary, in that way, there’s a joy in acting. Since I’ve never had a role like Enomoto, it’s refreshing.

What did you bear in mind as you were acting?

Speaking in an indifferent tone, and not moving very much, I guess. (laughs) Basically, I acted according to the director’s instructions, but it’s the first time I’ve ever portrayed such a deadpan character. If I remain too motionless, I start to feel like I need to do something. And if I try to move a little or alter my gaze, the director tells me, “Don’t move. Keep looking forward while saying your lines.” (laughs) So I’m determined to act indifferently.

It really is a departure from the roles you’ve acted so far.

It is. For example, in comedy dramas when I acted as Kaibutsu-kun or a freeter, there was fun in making the lines more interesting through movement. This time round, in contrast, I don’t move and I also speak indifferently. However, I actually found that amusing. So even when I watch [myself] through the monitor, (and this might just be me) but I find it really interesting.

“Kagi no Kakatta Heya” is a classic puzzle mystery where the locked room incidents are solved. With tricks complicating the [drama], the script is also difficult, right?

Although I predicted from the beginning that it would be difficult with lots of lines, when I actually opened the script, I said, “See, I knew it.” (laughs) But the stuff about locks and locked rooms were something which I’ve never known before. Therefore, it was fun reading it with an amazement as I went, “So if you do this, it becomes like this? Oh…”

Enomoto has many difficult lines, so were there any tricks to memorizing them?

I’m endlessly memorizing them at home. I desperately memorize them at night, hoping that it’ll get organized in my mind by the following morning. However, there were times when nothing got in at all. (laughs) I also tried writing [the lines] down to memorize them, but in my case, I was too bothered by the neatness of my handwriting. I couldn’t memorize a thing so I stopped. (laughs) So I just determinedly read in order to memorize. However, after all the effort I put into memorizing, in contrast to a stage play, once it gets the OK signal, I don’t need to say it anymore. Although I’m happy about that, it’s also a little sad.

Since you have already filmed a lock breaking scene, have you discovered anything?

As I was guided by a professional locksmith during the filming, it opens splendidly. He taught me the mechanisms and the methods, so I thought, “Yeah I can do this too.” When I tried it during the break, I couldn’t open this at all. (laughs) Although if it opened easily, in that case, it becomes a problem. However, locks and safes which people have not seen before will appear in this drama, so it’s interesting. Personally, I don’t dislike detailed work like opening locks and stuff.

How are Sato Koichi-san and Toda Erika-san, who form the locked room mystery-solving team?

I have only been together with them for a little while on variety shows, it’s the first time we’ve acted together. It’s the same case for Toda-san, but Koichi-san definitely hits me hard with his acting. Serizawa, who’s portrayed by Koichi-san, expresses astonishment and admiration at Enomoto’s crime solving and lock picking skills. In my role, I’m slightly more amazing, which is different from what happens normally. I rejoice over that and all. (laughs) Basically, although the 3 of us act together, our characters are a disconnected bunch. As the dialogue within the trio continues, I think it would be nice if a good rhythm and vibe comes out of it.

Please give a message and talk about the highlights to the people looking forward to the drama!

The highlight would be the solving of the locked room mysteries. I think that the tricks and the images look really novel. And I, the kind of person who doesn’t normally solve mysteries, will be taking a shot at solving complicated mysteries. I guess that’s refreshing? And I don’t just simply identify the criminal, the lock breaking is also something worth catching. Enomoto is someone who gets more fired up as the mystery gets harder, so if everyone could watch this it would make me very happy.

Translator's note: There's even a pre-episode mystery put up each week for viewers to solve, if you're into that kind of thing. As for me, I'll save the mystery solving until the day it airs.
