Here's the second part of the cross-talk where the members tell about what went on behind the scenes for each album song!

Only Star 2014.11.03_0011

Only Star: Tell us about “Daremo Shiranai”.

Ohno: That brings back memories. I think we performed it quite a bit.

Nino: Oh no, no! We’ve not performed it all that much yet.

Aiba: You let it mature a little, right?

Nino: We haven’t performed the heck out of it, right?

Ohno: (changes his mind) Yeah, we haven’t. We could think up of various versions of the performance from henceforth too.

Aiba: Yeah, that’s right! We have a concert version too. It’s growing! (laughs)

Only Star: And from a thrilling tune like TRAP, we transit to Matsumoto-san’s “Stay Gold”.

Jun: “TRAP” is slightly different from “Zero-G” and “Asterisk” in the sense that although it’s dance music, it’s a very level tune. To me, it feels very earthy, it didn’t give you this floating feeling.

Aiba: For me, when I heard the intro up till right before the chorus, I felt a little nervous. I like that.

Sho: Aiba-kun, you were pushing for it quite a bit, weren’t you?

Aiba: Um hmm. It felt like it was about to fall off the track list for a moment back then. We had already decided on the songs, but everyone seemed to have forgotten about it. I remember saying back then, “Hey, how about that song!?” Then everyone got excited about it again.

Sho: A star solution.

Aiba: That was a close shave! (laughs)

Only Star: Matsumoto-san’s “STAY GOLD” seemed to stay true to the DIGITALIAN theme.

Jun: During the album presentation, it was still stuck at the demo stage and wasn’t completed though.

Sho: The chorus is really catchy compared to the introduction though.

Jun: It feels like it opens up during the chorus.

Sho: This came to my mind as I was listening to Arashi’s album at the gym, but I would recommend this song while you’re on the exercise bikes.

Only Star: I get the impression that the songs take on a sweeter tone from “Bittersweet” onwards.

Jun: Ohno-san choreographed it for us. That was your first assignment for the year, right?

Ohno: It was tough.

Jun: I texted you about it, didn’t I? You had to cut short your New Year holiday and choreograph the song for us, so I wrote, “Hang in there!”

Ohno: Um hmm. I hadn’t choreographed a song like this before, so I wondered if I was able to pull it off. However, when I listened to it over the New Year holiday, surprisingly, the choreography came to me. It was fun! The singing parts were clearly defined and I was able to match it with the choreography.

Sho: The professional choreographer commented how amazing Ohno-san’s choreography was.

Ohno: I hardly moved at all when I entered the studio. I was thinking about the formation the whole time.

Jun: The choreographer said Ohno-san fell asleep on the studio floor.

Ohno: Hey, I wasn’t sleeping! (laughs) I just wasn’t moving. I had to go to the studio even though I wasn’t actively dancing. If I stayed at home, I’d end up drinking. It’s the New Year, after all.

Nino: That can’t be helped. (laughs)

Aiba: There are tons of distractions, right?

Only Star: How about Ninomiya-san’s solo, “Merry Christmas”?

Jun: It’s a nice title.

Nino: Thank you!

Jun: I listened to the demo tape Nino made before the song was completed. There weren’t lyrics inserted yet, so he showed me the outline of the lyrics on his computer.

Sho: I thought that made sense. We produced the album in summer, but the tour would take place in winter. I thought it was intentional.

Nino: Usage-wise, yes?

Only Star: Kimi no Yume wo Miteita is also an Arashi-style love song, isn’t it?

Sho: We inserted this song because we felt that we didn’t have an Arashi-ish song in this album.

Nino: Yeah, we put this song in last.

Jun: It’s a cheery and catchy song too.

Aiba: I loved Leader’s soaring opening line. It’s a pretty high note too.

Ohno: Yeah it was…

Only Star: It felt like “One Step” wrapped up the second half and gave coherence to the album.

Sho: I whistled for the first time in this song. When I whistled in the booth, I was told, “Hey, this sounds good. Want to try recording this?”

Jun: Oh!!

Ohno: So that actually happened!? (tries whistling)

Only Star: Oh!? (laughs)

Ohno: I’m envious. [T/N: Since we all know Ohno can’t really whistle.]

Jun: You would be envious, yes? (laughs) We can’t whistle in the song after all. (Since the only whistling part was Sho’s.)

Only Star: And the last solo belongs to Sakurai-san, “Hey Yeah”.

Sho: It leaned towards the human element of the album.

Jun: I like the line, “What is happiness?”

Sho: Thanks! I had the image of people placing their arms around each other’s shoulders and moving forward.

Only Star: And the last song is “Hope in the darkness”.

Nino: There was something missing, right?

Aiba: It wraps up the album nicely.

Nino: You’re heading into tomorrow, it says.

Sho: That’s a nice way to end it off.

Only Star: And we have the bonus track, “Take Off!!!!!” which Sakurai-san composed the lyrics to.

Sho: Yes. Everyone stayed true to their rapping parts. I was surprised.

Nino: We were dead serious when it came to practicing.

Aiba: The day before, right? That was the last track we recorded and we didn’t have many days left. We listened to the track on set and received the direction.

Jun: This was the first time you wrote the song lyrics in addition to the rap, right?

Sho: Oh man, it just came to me. There was a model plane in my living room that I had received from JAL, which had our faces on it. I looked at it and the fan club newsletter while composing the lyrics. Then I had the image of the sky. This is kind of mushy, but I thought of you guys while writing it!

Other 4 members: Oooh~

Only Star: Huh!? Wouldn’t you guys get excited over this?

Sho: Nope, the members wouldn’t get excited over this. (laughs)

Nino: Ehh~ Wow!!

Jun: We’ll follow you our whole lives!

Sho: I told you they weren’t, right!? (laughs) When I wrote this, I didn’t intend to release something which would summarize our 15th year anniversary, but I wanted something in its place, something like a love letter, and it became a song which expressed our gratitude.

Jun: It’s nice how the five rings of light became six rings in the end. [T/N: Jun is making a reference to the lyrics. The five rings of light become six, one for the fans, at the end of the song.]

Sho: Thank you very much! That’s all for the Digitalian album.
