I was agonizing over what I should do for Sho's birthday, and decided to go with the Arashi members' comments about Sho from the Iza Now concert pamphlet (2004). The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Nino: Sho-kun… he’s such an adult. He drinks coffee! (laughs) I actually think that Sho-kun feels the most stress when he’s under pressure that’s not really pressure. We’re often on various sets where people would say stuff like, “Sho-kun, please take charge of this segment here.” Every time I hear that, I wonder to myself, “Why?” Of course, that “Why” isn’t directed towards Sho-kun. It’s just that it’s only natural for everyone to ask Sho-kun to take charge. Whenever I see that, I think to myself, “Does Sho-kun secretly feel stressed about it?” But Sho-kun always lives up to whatever’s expected of him, so I feel that he’s truly an adult and a very responsible person.
Jun: And then we have Sho-kun. I wonder… he feels like a mother to me. Not a father, but a mother. If you were to ask me to describe the difference, I feel that a father is someone who leads (his children) as they watch his back. A mother, on the other hand, is different, isn’t she? I have this image of a mother warmly watching over (her family), righting their path when they stray. I can’t word this very well, but in any case, Sho-kun is not a father. (laughs) Even when everyone is voicing their opinions, he’s very democratic. For example, when the members are talking about the concert, Sho-kun and I are the ones who talk the most. During those times, I would assert my opinion, and he would respond with his own opinion, and I’d assert my opinion on something else… Sho-kun’s response during those times remind me of a mother (laughs). Sho-kun has an opinion, which is something like his own worldview. Well, I’d say everyone does, but when Sho-kun’s opinion differs from the others, he doesn’t take the initiative to state his opinion, unless there’s some sort of opportunity. At other times, he observes the situation. When the time comes for a discussion, he voices his opinions properly. In that sense, he’s like a mother. And Sho-kun is excellent at talking. I think he’s great at explaining stuff.
Aiba: Sho-kun is generally a cheerful and funny guy. Despite his image, he’s surprisingly careless in certain things, and he enjoys it. Basically, I’m sure he’s a kind person. For example, recently the two of us went drinking together. I started to say, “Hey, let’s go for karaoke!” And I went with Sho-kun. However, when we reached the karaoke store, I started to feel sleepy and dozed off. But Sho-kun didn’t get angry then. No, he probably was a little annoyed, but he didn’t let me feel it. (laughs) It’s like I don’t have to worry when we’re around, it feels very carefree to be around him. Although he’s like that in private, he’s very together at work. He speaks about the important issues at critical moments in a smart way, and I truly feel he’s someone who thinks about various things. In addition, he’s someone who can view his surroundings objectively. In any case, he works incredibly hard at everything he does, and I feel that he’s definitely a diligent person.
Ohno: As for Sho-kun, although he’s a funny guy, the surprising thing is he gets depressed easily. When he was younger, this was especially true. Whenever something didn’t go smoothly, he had this habit of saying, “Ah~ this isn’t going to work.” I’m sure he wanted the people around him to tell him, “Hey, it’ll be alright.” When that happens, I’m sure he’ll cheer up straightaway. Recently, I think he’s become completely positive. However, as a joke, he occasionally goes, “Ah~”. Whenever I hear that, I feel somewhat nostalgic. (laughs) He’s also unexpectedly simple, or rather, someone who’s easy to understand. You can see his mood transitions very clearly. Whenever he’s happy, he has an elated look on his face; when he’s looking at something in earnest, he fully concentrates on that one thing. His face is just so expressive.
In addition, Sho-kun is someone who labors endlessly. I mean, when he was attending university, he had to juggle between school and work. Even though it was really tough for him, he never complained. It was especially tough when [his studies] clashed with the concerts, but he’d just come to rehearsals as usual and say, “I went to school this morning…” And after rehearsals were over, he’d go, “I have an exam tomorrow so I have to work hard tonight.” That’s when I thought, “Oh man, what’s up with this guy!?” (laughs) What’s more, he had a drama filming the next day. I wanted to ask him, “When did you memorize your lines?” but I felt that it was a stupid thing to ask, so I gave up. (laughs) I couldn’t even simply tell him, “Hey, all the best.”

Date: 2017-01-24 03:46 pm (UTC)I have to admit that Jun confuses me.. father? mother? which is it XD
And Ohno's commentary clearly shows why he is a great leader in a silent way - he observes & acts with small, but meaning gestures, and he always appreciates what the others do
AND for the birthday man himself: awwww~ I would love to cuddle the stressed young Sho-chan and I would love to have a bar-&-discussion-"date" (without the dating, just a meeting) with the all grown up Sho-master ♥

I feel that Riida is the most observant of Sho from among them. Aww how i adore the Yama-paair (>.<) I love reading these kind if interviews. It normalizes their image somehow and makes me realize that they are just like the rest of us.
And that schedule of Sho as a student though. That is just mad! I cannot even fathom how he managed to juggle everything then. I would have gone bonkers with that kind of schedule.
And thanks again for the translations! They are always a pleasure to be read (^-^)
