It has been an explosive start for Nino's new drama, Black Pean. I can't wait to watch this brilliant and arrogant surgeon take down the people around him. Be warned, Nino's character, Tokai Seishiro, isn't a nice guy. I'll be posting the cast interviews from TBS's Black Pean drama site.

What kind of person is Tokai, a surgeon who has been called a “demon in the operating theatre”?

Tokai is a rather unpleasant fellow. (laughs) He doesn’t display the occasional kindness that you would expect from the protagonist, he just is an offensive person. Because of the way he is, I thought it would be better to build up my image of Tokai. However, I also wanted to portray Tokai in an impassive way, so it was difficult balancing these two aspects. Through his impassiveness, I wanted to show how unpleasant Tokai was.

Besides creating Tokai’s personality, he has, above all else, a sincerity towards surgical operations. He is the purest person when it comes to surgeries. Tokai can be generally malicious, edgy and wicked, but when facing patients in the operating theatre, he must become a god. By showing a little gentleness or humanity during his operations, it would be nice if people said of Tokai, “He would actually be a good person if he kept on operating on people.” While I may be playing the leading role of this drama, I think the audience would best enjoy watching the drama through the perspective of medical intern Sera, portrayed by Takeuchi-kun. I’m sure the viewer’s feelings are the same as Sera’s. Takeuchi-kun also played a part in creating a vantage point for viewing Tokai.

How did you prepare for the role of a surgeon?

I was given the opportunity to observe a cardiac surgery before filming started. Initially I only concentrated on watching the heart as it was being operated on; but along the way, I started to observe how the doctor commanded the surgical team and the team’s reactions. I watched how the surgeon communicated what he wanted next, and what he would do to the team. Although it was my first time watching a surgery, strangely, somehow a novice could tell when a surgeon is technically proficient or demonstrates leadership. It was extremely persuasive. I thought the atmosphere was amazing.

When we were filming, the director kept telling me to perform each action faster. During the surgery scenes, we had a medical supervisor on set. He would tell me things like, “During this scene, perform this action like so,” and direct me meticulously. During the actual take, we’d see how fast I can perform the action. We’d place emphasis on the speed, and then think about how the shot should be captured.

I also practised the surgeon’s knot extensively. In between filming scenes, at home, I’d practise it over and over. I could keep on doing stuff like that, so it wasn’t hard for me. (laughs) I kept talking to Takeuchi-kun about ways to tie the surgeon’s knot, since there are different ways to go about it. We’d say, “I’m good at tying it this way,” or “I can’t get used to this method.” However, Takeuchi-kun’s character, Sera, is a medical intern, so he’s practising surgical knots in the drama as well. Takeuchi-kun’s cheating, really. (laughs) On the other hand, my character is someone who has to tie surgical knots very quickly, so it’s tough. However, I was able to put in a lot of practice, so I think I’ve become rather quick at it.

What is the atmosphere like on set?

The atmosphere on set is really good. I think I talk to Takeuchi-kun often, since we have a lot of scenes where we’re together. However, we’d talk about such idle topics that we’d forget about it the next day. (laughs) Well, it’s fun. Doing so releases the tension in between takes, and I generally spend my time chatting with the rest of the cast at my usual energy level. When Takeuchi-kun and Kotaro-kun are on set, it’s just so refreshing! (laughs) Thanks to them, the atmosphere on set is always invigorating.
